Ambar Kelly’s patented solution, RiserSafe®, has been employed on Canada Water - Plot Two, a notable mixed-use development. The goal of the Mace team was to significantly improve safety and buildability of the project by utilising a complete riser floor solution.
The ambitious development plans for Canada Water include a five and six storey building complex, comprising a leisure centre, town centre shops, food outlets and offices. Situated centrally in Zone Two, designated a London Opportunity Area, Canada Water offers an array of direct transport links for commuters and tourists alike. Furthermore, the development includes the delivery of a new town centre, the first in London in over 50 years.
Mace Group, Ambar Kelly's client, was the principal contractor on the project and specified 198 RiserSafe® units purchased directly from Ambar Kelly. The bespoke design, manufacture, and supply of RiserSafe® allowed for different interfacing challenges to be accommodated in one product. Ambar Kelly engaged in weekly meetings with Watermans Structures and Mace to ensure the setting out of the structural precast planks was coordinated with the builders work openings. Our RiserSafe® model was used regularly by Watermans as part of the coordination process.
RiserSafe® units averaging 2mx1m in size, were delivered to site prefabricated and simply lifted into place with the crane by Severfield. The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) services penetrations were coordinated by Ambar Kelly to meet the design intent of the project with units delivered to site with pre-cut penetrations and cover plates mechanically fixed at the factory for complete safety on site.
The design of our permanent riser flooring is adapted to meet the individual interface requirements for each project and the RiserSafe® system is a complete riser flooring solution that works with all frame types. It is installed from the moment the structure is formed, effectively preventing the fatal risks of fire and falling from height in a single product. The permanent, non-combustible riser flooring solution provides benefits to all key parties within the supply chain due to its flexible and versatile bespoke nature, allowing other disciplines to continue their work on the project without hindrance, but with enhanced safety and structure.
Mace’s project team chose Ambar Kelly's carbon-neutral RiserSafe® flooring over the established practice of fall protection products like GRP (Glass reinforced plastic) due to its buildability and flexibility. Every unit is manufactured off-site (reducing on site build time dramatically) and then supplied onsite complete and ready for lifting into place with ease. The Associate Director, who joined the project from One Crown Place; a previous successful partnership, where the site team won the Health, Safety and Wellbeing award for innovation by utilising RiserSafe®; presented Ambar Kelly’s product to the Canada Water Plot 2 team. Although the original approach only specified fall protection, on review, the Mace team recognised that Ambar Kelly would add value to the overall delivery of the scheme.
The project required an innovative, bespoke solution from Ambar Kelly, which involved unique units being made to allow the client to build separating firewalls inside the riser shafts, saving on the trimmer steels normally designed in the streel frame structure. Ambar Kelly’s contracts manager attended all coordination meetings on-site or Microsoft Teams and performed regular site inspections to ensure the installations were always correct. This exceptional service is offered as standard for all projects that Ambar Kelly supply.
Due to the scale of the job, precast planks and concrete topping were used, which is usually seen in projects involving educational or local authority facilities. However, on this occasion, it provided the clients with a cost-effective solution. 3D modelling of the units was created and reviewed by all involved parties for approval to ensure the necessary features met the design intent of the building.
For such an important community building, an effective and safe system was needed not only to protect workers during construction but also to ensure the building remains resistant to the fire through the life of the building. Ambar Kelly's recent ‘Lessons Learned’ review reflected a very high satisfaction rate of 86% out of 100%. We thank the bright, forward-thinking Mace project team for their engagement and open-minded approach to these very complicated riser shaft locations. The client team approach undoubtedly contributed to the safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of the project.
